Ear Infections in Children

Dr. Emily Martinson, Au.D., Ph.D.

It is a common occurrence for moms and dads – you are woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of your child screaming.  It could be time for a feeding or a diaper change, or it could be every patient’s nightmare… an ear infection.

Children, especially babies, are prone to ear infections as a much higher rate than adults.  The tube that provides fresh air to the middle ear is at a different angle in children, which makes it easier for infections to grow in children than in adults (more on that later).  Long story short, kiddos have a higher likelihood for developing ear infections than adults, and when they do develop, they are typically worse for children.

Some common signs of ear infections that moms and dads should keep their eyes out for can include crying and pulling at their ears.

Make sure to always take your child to their pediatrician if you suspect an ear infection.
