Troubleshooting Tips

Hearing aids are innovative devices that contain small sized components designed to absorb, amplify, and process sound. You wear your hearing aids regularly and are deeply familiar with how the device works, feels, and sounds when operating optimally. This also means that you can identify when your hearing aids seem to not be functioning properly. If you suspect any issues with your device, there are a few useful fixes that you can try at home before seeking professional repair services. Try these quick fixes and see if your hearing aid resumes working properly. If issues persist, you should see your hearing healthcare provider.

Inspect Device

Thoroughly examine your hearing aids. Check to see if there are any obstructions like dirt, earwax, hair, or other debris that could be blocking sound from being fully absorbed. Remove any of these elements by cleaning your device. Also, make sure that your hearing aid is turned on which seems obvious but you can forget, especially while getting familiar with your device.

Increase Volume

Check the volume settings and make sure that the level is set to meet your hearing needs. This also helps you see if you accidentally turned down the volume which would prevent you from hearing sound clearly.

Check Battery

Most hearing aids are powered with disposable batteries. So you want to make sure that the batteries have been inserted properly and that the compartment is properly secured. Additionally, make sure to test your batteries to ensure they are working and/or replace them when needed.

Inspect Tubing

different hearing aid styles feature tubing that connect device components. This tubing can experience damage from daily wear and tear which would restrict the processing of sound. So you can inspect the tubing for any breakage or other indications of damage.

When Professional Repair is Needed

It is common for hearing aids to need professional repair at some point. If you have tried to troubleshoot at home and continue to experience issues, you should take your device to be professionally inspected. In addition to this sign, there are other indications that you should see your hearing healthcare provider for professional repairs. This includes:
