Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Is Permanent. Here's How to Protect Your Hearing This Summer and All Year Long

Most people think of hearing loss as something that happens to them gradually with age, like a slow drift they'll notice someday and deal with then. What they don't think about is the summer they spent at outdoor concerts in their twenties, or the years of Fourth of July fireworks displays with their kids, or the Saturday mornings behind a lawn mower without a second thought. Those moments don't announce themselves. The damage accumulates quietly, and by the time most people notice, a meaningful and irreversible portion of their hearing is already gone.

This isn’t meant to alarm you but to be honest with you, and it's what we try to do with every patient who sits across from us. Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most preventable forms of hearing loss in existence, and summer, more than any other season, is when the risks are most concentrated and most overlooked.

How Loud Is Too Loud for Your Hearing?

Sound is measured in decibels, and the relationship between volume and hearing damage is not linear. It is exponential. A small increase in decibels represents a much larger increase in the energy hitting your inner ear.

The threshold most audiologists use as the starting point for concern is 85 decibels which is roughly the volume of a lawn mower or a hair dryer running close to your ear. At that level, sustained exposure over several hours begins to cause cumulative damage to the hair cells inside the cochlea. Those hair cells do not regenerate. Once they are gone, they are gone.

Here is where common summer sounds fall on that scale:

  • Lawn mower or leaf blower: 85–105 decibels. Extended yard work without hearing protection is one of the most common and underappreciated sources of noise-induced hearing loss in adults over 50.

  • Power tools and equipment: 95–115 decibels. Summer renovation projects, chainsaws, and similar equipment can cause damage within minutes at the high end of that range.

  • Concerts and live music events: 100–115 decibels near the stage. Outdoor concerts feel safer than indoor venues, but the volume levels are comparable. Distance from the speakers matters considerably because every additional foot reduces the intensity of what reaches your ears.

  • Fireworks: 140–160 decibels at close range. This is the single most intense noise exposure most people encounter in a given year, and it happens at an event where children are routinely present without any hearing protection. At those levels, damage can occur in seconds.

Do Hearing Aids Protect You from Loud Noise?

This is something we tell our patients regularly, and it surprises nearly all of them: hearing aids are not hearing protection.

Hearing aids are amplification devices, and their job is to make sound louder and clearer. At a fireworks display, a concert, or a loud outdoor event, wearing hearing aids means you are receiving amplified sound, not attenuated sound. The loud environment becomes louder, not safer.

If you wear hearing aids and plan to attend a loud event this summer, you have two practical options. You can remove your hearing aids for the duration of the event and use foam earplugs or over-ear protection instead. Or you can speak with your audiologist about custom hearing protection that is designed to work alongside your specific listening needs.

The same logic applies to protecting the hearing you still have. Many of our patients have hearing loss in some frequencies and preserved hearing in others. Ongoing noise exposure continues to damage the hearing that remains. Protecting what you have is not a secondary concern; rather, it is an active clinical priority.

What Hearing Protection Actually Works

Not all hearing protection is created equal, and the right choice depends on what you are doing.

Foam earplugs are inexpensive, widely available, and highly effective for situations where sound quality is not a priority, like yard work, power tools, and standing near fireworks. They reduce volume across all frequencies and are the right tool for those situations. The tradeoff is that they muffle sound significantly, which makes conversation difficult and listening to music not as enjoyable.

Over-ear earmuffs provide strong protection for louder equipment and are particularly useful when foam earplugs alone are insufficient, for activities like chainsaw work, shooting ranges, and similar high-decibel environments. They can also be worn together with foam earplugs for maximum protection.

Custom musician's earplugs are fitted specifically to your ears by an audiologist and use acoustic filters rather than simple foam blocking. They reduce overall volume while preserving the clarity and quality of sound, which means music still sounds like music, speech still sounds like speech, and you can still hear the people around you. These are the right choice for concerts, outdoor festivals, and any extended loud environment where you want to stay engaged with what's happening rather than sealed off from it.

What Are the Warning Signs of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss?

Ringing, buzzing, or muffled hearing after a loud event is called a temporary threshold shift. It’s your auditory system registering distress. Many people experience it and dismiss it as a normal consequence of a loud night. It resolves by morning, so the assumption is that no real harm was done.

That assumption is worth examining. A temporary threshold shift means your hair cells were stressed enough to respond. Occasional exposure at that level may not cause lasting damage, but regular exposure at that level — several concerts a summer, weekly fireworks in July, every weekend behind a mower — accumulates into permanent loss over years, even if no single event feels catastrophic in the moment.

If you are noticing tinnitus or muffled hearing after loud events with any regularity, that pattern deserves a conversation with an audiologist. It is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to pay attention.

Two Things Worth Doing Before Summer Gets Away from You

If you don’t currently have hearing loss, now is a good time to establish a baseline hearing evaluation. Knowing exactly where your hearing stands today gives you and your audiologist a meaningful reference point as the years go on and means that if noise exposure or other factors begin to affect your hearing, changes can be caught early and addressed.

If you already wear hearing aids, ask about custom hearing protection at your next visit. It’s a straightforward conversation, the fitting process is quick, and the difference it makes at a summer concert or a July Fourth event is something you will notice immediately.

Summer is loud. It doesn’t have to cost you your hearing.
